Union

Product / UI & UX Design

Present to the audience existence of cultural diversity and help them better understand that at the end of the day we are all humans, despite differences.

“Union” is a large project, dealing with complex topics and having a long-term vision of continuous development. This case study presents the concept and opportunities where it can be taken further.

Overview

“Union” is free online video platform designed to connect students from different cultures around the world.

The goal is to help students build understanding between each other and their cultures through unique Union's features that make it easier.

Acceptance and appreciation of different cultures start with understanding them. Students learn from other students firsthand about what is the same or different.

Landing page, platform and verification process can be experienced here.

Challenge

Kids are like sponges shaped by what they see and hear. It’s important they are raised to be good people. There is need to teach them about diversity, expose them to different cultures, and breed a level of compassion and understanding into them.

Even though there are many existing materials, diversity is still a topic which is reluctantly brought up. Therefore there is a still need for new solutions and ideas to make this subject matter more approachable.

Audience

Tweens, students aged 11 - 13 years old are becoming more selfconscious about cultural differences and are becoming more exposed to negative external factors about different cultures and diversity.

Secondary audience: teenagers, older students aged 13 - 16 years old. Broaden spectrum of 11 - 16 years old with a different background.

Audience Research

The main core of my research were interviews with primary and secondary audience, parents, psychologists and teachers. It was beneficial as thanks to that the approach was much more thought-through taking into consideration a lot of different point of views and perspectives.

I also learnt the subject by exploring existing materials like articles, books, videos etc. It helped me to understand this subject on the more academic level.

Defining Problems

Based on primary and secondary research I identified several reasons why this project is beneficial for the audience, as well as issues that this project addresses.

The problem of
existing solutions

The problem of many currently existing chats, websites and video platforms is the large presence of people unsuitable for young users. Most of the existing websites that give the users possibility to interact with each other are focused on dating and other things related to that.

Video chats like Skype, Facebook or WhatsApp also are much more focused on private use between friends rather than on meeting new people and actually sharing knowledge about different cultures.

current

How can we solve this?

There is a need for specific tool designed for tweens that will give them the possibility to interact with each other in safe environment created exactly for
this purpose.

User interface -
Initial approach

I designed first set of icons and started working on the visual system that will be implemented in the users search engine. As the main recipients are tweens,
I decided that I will give a try with colorful, very illustrative style.

Validation

User testing, feedback and deep reflection confirmed my belief that whole visual direction must be much more mature. One of the goals set in the brief was to create product that will be "positive, enlightening, understandable, yet not patronising."

User interface -
A different approach

Second approach was to avoid patronising, colorful visual style by converting it into minimalistic and sophisticated buttons and system of hashtags.

I also worked on additional features like chat notifications that help to carry on conversation as well as notify about suspicious behaviour.

Search engine will also allows users to connect with other users only from specific parts of the world by easy selecting system on the maps.

Creative Direction

Shows the subject and character of the platform through story-led videos with which the user can interact.

The videos show the contrast between different cultures and how they get connected with the use of the "Union"

The intention of this project was to create a free online video platform that will give students from around the world opportunity to interact with each other. Having this in mind, place it fits the best is various advertisement through interactive banners in social media, which group audience uses the most.

Additionally, "Union" could be introduced at school during for instance English lessons. Teachers would learn about "Union" via an e-mail promoting the positive impact of the platform.

Final Designs

Based on all received feedback from users as well as my colleagues I created more refined test version. It would be released to a wider group audience in order to see what works and what does not and then based on it introduce further refinements.
